What is Podiatry?
Podiatry is a field of medicine that strives to improve the
overall health of patients by focusing on preventing,
diagnosing, and treating conditions associated with the foot
and ankle.
Doctors of Podiatric Medicine (DPMs) are physicians and
surgeons who practice on the lower extremities, primarily on
feet and ankles.
If surgical intervention is needed procedures are usually
performed on an outpatient basis at the Surgical Center of
St. Louis, Christian Hospital Northeast, Barnes St. Peters
Hospital or DePaul Hospital under proper anesthetic. The
post-operative recovery period during which you will need to
stay off your feet usually varies from days up to six weeks
depending on the individual situation and procedure.
It is your right and responsibility to share in all
decisions about the care you receive. Discuss with your
podiatrist your individual condition, the proposed treatment
and other alternatives, and make sure your questions are
fully answered.
